Why addressed storage beats "pile it all together" tracking

When goods have no fixed location, finding the right item becomes a scavenger hunt, and a new hire is helpless for the first week. Addressed storage gives every bin its own barcoded address (receiving zone, rack, shelf), so the system always knows exactly where and how much stock sits. Picking becomes fast and no longer depends on a warehouse worker's memory.

Barcodes and accuracy

Products and bins are barcode-labeled. Scanning instead of manual entry eliminates mix-ups and wrong quantities — the most expensive kind of warehouse mistake, since they only surface when shipping to the customer.

Batches and expiration dates (FEFO)

For food, medicine, and cosmetics, it's critical to ship what expires soonest first. The system tracks batches by expiration date and suggests picking by FEFO (first expired, first out) — the batch with the nearest date goes out first. Nothing quietly expires in the back corner of a rack.

Core warehouse processes

• Receiving. Incoming deliveries with quantity, batch, and date logging; goods go straight to the receiving area.
• Put-away. Goods are placed into addressed bins.
• Picking. The system generates a bin-by-bin pick list for each order.
• Shipping. The movement is posted, and the balance is exact.
• Stocktaking. Full or partial, with discrepancy correction.

Reorder points (min/max) flag what needs restocking, and the movement log gives full traceability for every unit.
